SUBODH TIWARI
Yoga: The Foundation for a Flourished Mind and Body
It would not be wrong to say that Subodh Tiwari’s life has been a journey dedicated to serving humanity through Yoga. Over the decades, he has explored, understood and shared the wisdom of this ancient tradition, seeking to bring meaningful and positive change to the lives of people. His journey reflects a deep commitment to making Yoga a living force for health, healing, self-development and social wellbeing.
Being born at Kaivalyadhama, Lonavala—a place deeply rooted in Yoga and spirituality—was a blessing. His father, Shri O.P. Tiwari, was a disciple of Swami Kuvalayananda, the founder of Kaivalyadhama.
At the age of just six, he was introduced to spiritual practices by Swami Digambar-ji and began practising Yoga under the guidance and supervision of his father. These early experiences laid the foundation for a life dedicated to education, research, institution-building and public service.
In 1993, he began teaching Yoga and witnessed profound positive changes in the lives of his disciples. In March 1997, he made the decision to dedicate his life completely to Kaivalyadhama and its mission.
Over time, his journey, which began with teaching Yoga, expanded into the fields of Yoga research, academic institutions, international conferences, national policymaking and organizational leadership.
Today, his work represents an intersection of traditional Yoga, modern education, scientific research, institutional leadership and social development.
His vision is to promote Yoga as a holistic science for health, healing and self-development, while contributing to the social development of the nation.
vision
His vision is to promote Yoga as a holistic science for health, healing and self-development, while contributing to education, social wellbeing and human development.
His broader professional philosophy seeks to bring together the wisdom and experience of the yogic tradition with the understanding of modern science and the needs of contemporary society. For him, Yoga is not limited to a physical practice; it encompasses a wider approach to health, wellbeing, awareness and the development of the individual.
The institutional vision he has worked to advance is rooted in the belief that Yoga’s rich spiritual heritage can be meaningfully connected with scientific inquiry and contemporary education. This approach seeks to preserve the essence of traditional Yoga while making its knowledge and practices relevant to the changing needs of society.
mission
His work reflects a continuing effort to take Yoga beyond the mat—to explore and establish its relevance in education, research, healthcare, wellness, public policy and social development.
This mission has found expression through his involvement in:
- Yoga education and teacher training
- Scientific research and Yoga therapy
- Healthcare and wellness initiatives
- Public policy and national Yoga programmes
- Yoga certification and accreditation
- Institution-building and academic development
- International dialogue and exchange
- Social development and public engagement
Through these efforts, his work seeks to create a meaningful bridge between traditional knowledge and contemporary needs, allowing Yoga to evolve while remaining connected to its fundamental principles.
The Story Behind the Journey
Subodh Tiwari is a Yoga teacher, institutional leader, academic contributor and advocate for the wider development of Yoga in India and internationally.
Born on 24 April 1974 at Kaivalyadhama, Lonavala, his childhood unfolded in an environment deeply rooted in Yoga and spirituality. At the age of six, he was introduced to spiritual practices by Swami Digambar-ji and began practising Yoga under the guidance and supervision of his father, Shri O.P. Tiwari, a disciple of Swami Kuvalayananda, the founder of Kaivalyadhama.
Yoga gradually became more than a childhood discipline. In 1993, he began teaching Yoga and witnessed the positive changes it brought to the lives of his disciples. In March 1997, he made the decision to dedicate his life completely to Kaivalyadhama and its mission.
Over the following decades, his journey at Kaivalyadhama grew alongside the institution itself. He took on a range of responsibilities, serving as Administrator, Joint Director, Trustee, CEO, Honorary Secretary and Chairman of the School Managing Committee. These roles gave him the opportunity to contribute not only to the administration of the institution but also to its academic, educational and developmental activities.
His work gradually expanded beyond institutional responsibilities. He became associated with government committees, academic councils, Yoga certification and accreditation, curriculum development, wellness initiatives and national Yoga programmes. He contributed to initiatives involving the Ministry of AYUSH, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Ministry of Tourism, NCTE, UGC and other institutions.
His engagement with Yoga also took him beyond India. He has conducted Yoga workshops across Europe, Asia and North America and has participated as a speaker, chairman and organiser at numerous international conferences and forums. Through these engagements, he has contributed to the wider understanding and dissemination of Yoga across different cultures and communities.
Alongside his institutional and international work, his academic interests have continued to develop. He has taught both the practical and philosophical dimensions of Yoga and has served on the boards and committees of universities and educational institutions. His academic and research contributions include work relating to Yoga, wellbeing, Yoga therapy, health and the history of Yoga research.
At the heart of his approach to Yoga is a simple yet significant distinction: Yoga is not only about “doing,” but also about “being.” For him, Yoga extends beyond physical practice and is closely connected with harmony with nature, discipline, dedication and devotion—values that can provide a foundation for a meaningful and balanced life.
His interests also extend beyond Yoga. He has maintained a strong connection with nature and has shown a continuing interest in environmental responsibility, photography and social service.
His organisational leadership has further extended to the Indian Yoga Association. He served as Honorary Vice President from 2018 to 2022 and became Secretary General in 2022. During this period, the organisation witnessed considerable growth, including the establishment of 28 state chapters, a 100% increase in membership, greater financial autonomy, seven national conclaves and the affiliation of 400 associate centres.
Taken together, his journey reflects a sustained engagement with Yoga—not only as a discipline of personal practice, but also as a field of education, research, institution-building, public engagement and social development.
